Pekin Marigold Festival

A great crowd was at the Pekin Country Club's Marigold Wine Tasting event on Thursday, August 29th.   Pekin Main Street’s annual Friday Night Family Fest will be held on Friday, September 6, 2013, from 5:00-10:00 p.m. on the Courthouse Square in Downtown Pekin. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy this family event to kick-off the Marigold Festival Weekend.   Pre-show entertainment will begin on the Pekin Insurance Main Stage at Elizabeth and Capitol Streets at 5:00pm with the band Flying Crazy Monkeyz, followed by the Intentional Praise Band at approximately 6:00. The Pekin’s Got Talent competition will kick off at 7:00 with popular DJ “Dr” Chris Michaels from 104.9 The Wolf hosting. After 2 prior rounds of auditions, the field of contestants has been narrowed down to the top 12. These ten contestants will be competing for cash prizes generously donated by Herget Bank. Contestants are: Gunner Harnett and Lexi Maxwell, Libby Green, Bailey Haynes, Emory Milot, Natalie Gibbs, Aubrey Whyman, Cody Salem, Allison Lowman, Tamera Johnsen, Morning Star and RD Jackson. The Marigold Festival Carnival will hold a special Wristband Night on Thursday, September 5th from 5:30 to 9:30 pm.  Wristbands are $20 per person.  The regular ticket prices for the festival are $1.25 per ticket or a family pack of 20 tickets for $20.  All rides take two or more tickets. There are 100 Wristband tickets available for pre-sale at a special price of only $15.  These are available while they last at the Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce, 402 Court Street, between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

Congratulations to Brittany Sherwood who was crowned Miss Marigold at the 2013 Subway Miss Marigold Pageant.  She is a freshman at Olivet Nazarene University, majoring in mathematics.  The Subway Miss Marigold Pageant is a scholarship pageant.  Contestants are judged on talent, interview, casual wear, evening wear, and community service.  The event was held on Saturday, August 10th at the F.M. Peterson Theater at Pekin Community High School. In addition to her $2,000 scholarship, Sherwood also received a scholarship for her community service. First Runner-Up was Sara Alesandrini, a junior at Iowa State University where she is studying interior design.  She earned a $500 scholarship. The Second Runner-Up and winner of a $250 scholarship was Emily Lowman.  She is a sophomore at Illinois State University majoring in secondary art education and studio arts: sculpture.  The entire pageant court will also receive scholarships.  They include Sarah Hayes, a senior at Pekin Community

Applications are now available for the Pekin Marigold Festival Run with the Saints 5K Run/Walk.  It will be held on Saturday, September 7th, at 7:30am in Coal Miner's Park.  Applications and information are available at:  http://www.pekinchamber.com/images/Marigold13/Saints5K.pdf
