Pekin Marigold Festival
announces theme of 2022 Festival: “Back in Time: 50 Years of Marigold
Memories.”
Pekin, IL - On
September 8th – 11th the Pekin Marigold Festival will
celebrate its 50th year honoring Senator Everett Dirksen. This year’s
theme, “Back In Time”, will reflect on how the Pekin Marigold Festival has
become a cherished tradition in the Central Illinois region.
Beloved by
his hometown, Pekin hosted the first festival in 1973 as a celebration of the
late Senator’s legislative legacy. The Pekin Marigold Festival was named after Senator
Dirksen’s love for marigolds, and to this day Pekin is recognized as the
Marigold Capital of the World. Senator Dirksen was most known for his key roles
in passing the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (1963), the Civil Rights Act of 1964,
the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Open Housing Act of 1968.
Chairperson of
the 2022 festival, Brandon Burling, reflects on the love of community the
Senator displayed throughout his lifetime, stating, “Senator
Dirksen once said that ‘When all is said and done, the real citadel of strength
in any community is in the hearts and minds and desires of those who dwell
there.’ The Pekin Marigold Festival is all about community and the
families, businesses and organizations that make it a great place to live.
Regardless of the legacy that Dirksen made in our history books, he never
forgot the importance of coming home. This 50th Festival aims to remind
everyone what made him so important to this city.”
Burling continues
by unfolding more regarding the 2022 Pekin Marigold Festival theme.
“The
theme is centered around the essence of traveling back in time and taking a
trip down memory lane,” says Burling. “With this being the 50th Festival, we
want Pekin residents and general Festival goers to recollect their favorite Marigold
Memories that embody what this Festival is all about. Sharing moments that they
will never forget, while also creating new ones for years to come.”
The committee has plans in store to make this year’s
festival memorable. Burling states, “I don’t want to give too much away…but
let’s just say that with this being the 50th Festival, we’re going to celebrate
this milestone in a big way.”
